Amazon RDS or AWS services

I'm interested in trying out MariaDB, and was wondering if anyone has MariaDB running with Amazon RDS or is it only possible using some sort of VM? I can try it out that way, but being on the free tier sure limits things.

MariaDB 10.0.17 was made available on Amazon RDS on the 7th October 2015 - see more at https://aws.amazon.com/rds/mariadb/
